This blog post was inspired by a recent Barbell Shrugged podcast I listened to earlier in the week.
There were some great insights for everyone to understand.
Please remember, whether your are Training or Exercising, there is no right or wrong, we accept and support both here at C5, but, it's always good to understand where you sit on the Fitness spectrum.
So what is Training?
Training is working towards a specific goal or set of goals. It means that you track your results, you follow a specific program, and you dedicate specific amounts of time per day to achieve these desired results. You train for a specific TEST or TESTS (perhaps a competition, or The CrossFit OPEN, maybe weight loss, or body composition goals...etc). There are failures, there is risk, there is sacrifice, there is vulnerability, there is stress....etc. Training is HARD! You are constantly being put outside of your comfort zone, you work on your weaknesses to get better. You are coachable and have sought out a Coach to work with you individually. This could look as simple as asking questions on what you could/should do when you're not working with group classes, and/or as complex as paying for an Individual Design and Individual Coaching. You track nutrition and are on a specific nutrition plan, you track hydration, sleep cycles, recovery efforts....etc.
What is Exercising?
Exercising is more of a maintenance program that you participate in. Whether it's with a group of people/friends, or you do it on your own, it is executed for pure enjoyment. You do it because you feel that you should for your own health, or perhaps to make sure you continue to fit in your favorite jeans. There is no risk of failure because you are not striving for specific goals. There is no stress around it because the pressure to "do better" or "achieve specific goals" is not there. You don't track your results, you don't plan your life around it, you don't make lifestyle sacrifices for it, you just show up, go through the motions, have fun, and breathe, sweat and move.
As stated above; "...whether your are Training or Exercising, there is no right or wrong, we accept and support both here at C5, but, it's always good to understand where you sit on the Fitness spectrum."
At CrossFit Five Cities, we have a nice blend of both, people who are Training, and people who are Exercising. I wouldn't want it any other way! I love that we have this diversity in our C5 Fitness Community!
The main thing to remember here, we support each of these groups equally! And we expect you to do the same!
If you just want to Exercise, that is AWESOME and we love and respect that. I also hope that you support our hungry, driven individuals who are Training for something.
If you are Training, we love and respect that as well! We also hope that you support our individuals who are just here to Exercise and aren't as hungry as you to achieve PR's, push through pain, and spend extra time working on weaknesses. Training isn't for everyone. Just like Exercise isn't for everyone...........(even though it should be...at a minimum ;) )
Enjoy your Hump Day Friends (whether you're Training or Exercising)!
