Genetics and Food: Do our genes determine which foods we should eat?

Untitled design-5.png

Nutritional research has come along way in determining how we can better understand which foods nourish our bodies and which do not.

A relatively new branch of science known as nutrigenetics has become very popular. It is based on the idea that your genes can tell you what foods you should or should not be consuming and in what proportions.

One such company is 23andMe’s GenoPalate option, which utilizes your saliva to determine what percentages of each macronutrient (protein, carbs, and fat) your body prefers, in addition to what specific needs your genes have for the types of foods you consume. You also receive a list of what nutrients your body either needs more of or does not metabolize well so that you can consume more foods which contain them.

A few of us at C5 have begun to test out 23andMe’s Genopalate service in the pursuit of learning more about how our bodies want to be fueled.

After all, our journeys are so individualized as it is, why would our nutrition be any different?

Our goal here at C5 is to optimize health through fitness and nutrition. Every step to learn more about your body and what it requires to perform is a step in the right direction.
